The 2017 World Crane and Transport Summit (WCTS) was held in Amsterdam on 7 November. The two-day Summit attracted more than 250 high quality industry professionals from around the world. The packed programme featured more than 22 presentations from leading industry figures, covering many aspects of the crane and transport industry, including: safety; workforce and training; technology and site applications; OEM perspectives; and specialized transport.
The conference opened with Hendrik Sarens, Sarens NV, and Mike Appling, TNT Crane & Rigging, both giving personal, funny and, at times, moving perspectives on safety. Sarens reflected on his family’s journey in the industry, highlighting how it’s instinctive for us to push limits yet we must remain wary of a ”machismo culture”. Appling related how meeting the victim of an industrial accident has affected him personally and the procedures that TNT has in place to minimise incidents.
Nadine Dereza, was the conference chairperson. Nadine has presented for CNN, Simply Money, BBC, Sky TV, SABC and Summit TV. As London Markets Correspondent for Financial Times and Summit TV, she was awarded ‘Financial Journalist of the Year’.

World Crane and Transport Summit 2015 success
The fifth World Crane and Transport Summit was welcomed by more than 270 delegates as it opened its doors at the NH Grand Krasnapolsky Hotel in Amsterdam, Netherlands, last week.
The event was opened by Alex Dahm, editor of International Cranes and Specialized Transport magazine, followed by Joel Dandrea, Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC&RA) executive vice president.
The conference was held over two days, with presentations from a range of speakers including keynote speaker Jan Kleijn, Mammoet CEO. Kleijn started the two-day event with a speech highlighting some of the potentially disruptive trends impacting on the industry. He mentioned disruptions to the energy industry, the refugee crisis in Europe, lower oil prices, political issues in Russia. He also took a look at the future of the industry and potential influence from web-based technology companies, 3D printing and sustainability.
Continuing with the theme of safety, Marco van Daal used his time on stage to take a look at why so many crane accidents happen in the wind energy industry, taking a look at pressures on the load, reasons behind crane collapses and how technology also changes the way the industry needs to look at job preparation. “Almost all crane accidents come down to human mistakes,” van Daal said. “The use of the word accident implies that the ‘accident’ was not foreseeable and manageable, however, most crane accidents are avoidable.”
One way to avoid accidents is with training, as Natasja Sesink, BeOne Development operational partner, showed. She gave her presentation on training and development programmes for heavy lifting and transportation. “We are living in interesting times,” Sesink said. “There are many ways to facilitate and participate in training. Digital learning now includes simulators, apps, e-learning, Google Classroom and augmented reality. This involves the real world and the virtual world. Augmented reality on construction sites could be the learning for the future.”
A focus on safety and developments in the crane and transport sector continued to be the theme of discussion during the second day of the Summit. A presentation from Jussi Yli-Niemi, Havator Group CEO, gave insight into areas that included environmental sustainability and strict operational requirements when operating in Scandinavia. Ton Klijn, Wagenborg Nedlift managing director and ESTA board director, gave an overview of where the proposals for a European Crane Operator Licence (ECOL) currently stands and ways in which the scheme could be implemented.
Major developments in rope technology and implications for transforming hoisting performance was also discussed, with an interesting presentation from Dr Oliver Fries, WireCo World Group vice president of global research and development, innovation and technology.
The afternoon’s presentations included a round table discussion on industry recruitment, with feedback from members of the next generation of employees. Speakers included Marcus Chee, a crane specialist at Bok Seng Logistics, Thierry van Schaik, SSC Wind wind turbine installation engineer, and Koen Doorman, Mammoet junior engineer.
The event was concluded with reports on challenging specialized transport projects in Costa Rica and Guatemala and a video of the winning Moving Job of the Year, presented to Tradelossa by the SC&RA at the Job of the Year Awards 2015.
The World Crane and Transport Summit was organised by International Cranes and Specialized Transport magazine and KHL Group. It was supported by industry associations, including the SC&RA and ESTA. Following the outstanding success of the previous World Crane and Transport Summits that were held in the Netherlands, in 2014 this premier event moved to the USA for the first time. This unique event brings together key stakeholders in the global lifting and heavy transport industry.
More than 260 people attended the fourth World Crane and Transport Summit (WCTS) in Florida, USA, on 12 and 13 November, including leading crane and transport professionals, from around the world. The summit is fully supported by top crane associations SC&RA, ESTA, Sindipesa and CICA together with many of their members. Supporters and sponsors also include leading crane and specialized transport equipment manufacturers, suppliers of equipment and services and other industry organisations.
Alan Barnhart, Barnhart Crane & Rigging chief executive officer, opened the WCTS in Miami with a keynote speech. Barnhart said the crane and transport industry should celebrate its record of innovation and profit generation, and recognise the importance and rewards of work. “Work is not something you do to afford to do the good stuff in life. Work is part of the good stuff”, Barnhart told the audience at the Biltmore Hotel. “We should celebrate the innovation, the pofits, and the value they create – I think we should celebrate work.”

The third World Crane and Transport Summit
The World Crane and Transport Summit 2013 opened on 29 October to an international audience in Amsterdam, Netherlands. More than 250 industry professionals registered for the event at the Hotel Krasnapolsky in central Amsterdam.
It is the third time that the two day conference has been held. The event offers thought-provoking presentations to help generate debate on key issues facing the lifting and project transport industry worldwide. Speakers at this year’s event include: Léon Schöpping, senior construction engineer & PTE lifting & hoisting, Shell International Exploration & Production; Joel Dandrea, executive vice president, Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA); and David Collett, ESTA president and R Collett & Sons (Transport) managing director.
The first part of the programme set the scene with presentations on the world economy, its link to the construction industry and the implications for the crane and transport sector. Key issues facing the industry were presented both from an equipment end user and from a manufacturer perspective.
Another top theme of the day is the importance of global partnerships to achieve common requirements in lifting and transport. In respect of harmonising standards, the issues regarding the EN 13000 European standard governing rated capacity limiters continues to make progress.
Major input from Chinese manufacturers at the event provides insight into the world’s largest market and the ambitions of these companies domestically and globally.

More than 300 industry professionals gathered at Amsterdam’s Hotel Krasnapolsky for the two day conference and networking dinner. It was an outstanding success, for attendees and sponsors alike.
The event, held bi-annually, offered presentations and debate on the key issues facing the worldwide crane and transport industry. Speakers included Joel Dandrea, executive vice president, Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) and Christian-Jacques Vernazza, president and chief executive of Mediaco and the president of the European Association of Abnormal Road Transport and Mobile Cranes (ESTA), among many others.
Talk centred on the world economy and the importance of global partnerships to achieve common requirements in lifting and transport activities, particularly from a safety point of view.
Among a range of agreements and plans was ESTA’s announcement of a global best practice guide for the use of self propelled modular transporter (SPMT). It is the first standard to be written for this equipment. ESTA and FEM also confirmed that their joint work at height working group could result in a FEM standard by the end of next year.
The EN 13000 European standard governing rated capacity limiters and other elements of new mobile cranes was another major topic discussed and it became apparent that the demand from the USA for override keys to be included in the crane cab is gaining support worldwide.
Training and certification were also high on the agenda, especially in light of a global shortage of good skilled people with experience.
In addition, major Chinese manufacturers provided insights into their ambitions and capabilities domestically and internationally.
The 2011 summit attracted 277 delegates from more than 80 companies and 23 countries.
Almost 300 delegates attended the two day World Crane and Transport Summit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 22 and 23 October.
Top representatives from crane and transport companies, equipment manufacturers, associations and standards bodies from around the world met to discuss industry issues. These included new safety standards for design and use of equipment, issues for operators and business.
Highlights for the 289 attendees included the signing of an international agreement to foster closer working with common aims for harmonised standards licensing and ways of working. Members of the new World Crane and Transport Alliance are the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC&RA), European Association of Heavy Haulage, Transport and Cranes (ESTA), Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA), New Zealand Heavy Haulage Association (NZHHA), Crane Association of Canada (CRAoC).
There was also a productive and detailed debate on issues and proposals related to the amendment of the EN13000 standard for cranes regarding rated capacity limiters.
